I’m 5’3” with a long torso and shorter legs, so finding jeans that fit well is always a challenge. The mom jean trend was my favorite because it was easy to find a pair of pants with a high-waist and I could get away with rolling the bottoms up or going for a more straight, cropped silhouette, which would hit just below my ankle instead of slightly above. But now, with the return of baggy jeans styles—including barrel jeans—I am once again faced with the dilemma of choosing a short jeans fit (which doesn’t always work on me for some reason) or getting my pants hemmed.
However, I might not have as much trouble as I initially thought. While on a recent hunt for fall denim, I came across what I believe are the best barrel jeans for short women, which made me so excited to finally participate in this season’s trendiest style.
Washes: 1
Material: 100% cotton
Rise: 12 inches
Inseam: 27 inches
As much as I have wanted to participate in the barrel jeans trend, I’ve had a hard time finding a pair that works for me. Since I have shorter legs, the silhouette often feels a bit too baggy, and the barrel silhouette ends up lost because of all the extra material. Just Black Denim never disappoints, though, so when I saw they came out with The Seamed Barrel Jean, I had to give them a try.
The jeans are designed to have a more oversized fit, which actually counteracts a lot of the issues I’ve had with other barrel jeans styles. Since they have a more relaxed, baggy look to begin with, the extra material feels a lot more intentional. That being said, they do run a bit big, so if you prefer to have a tighter fit at the waist, I recommend sizing down. I’m a size 26 in jeans, but I could have probably made a 25 work (though I like the loose waist look).
These are constructed from 100 percent cotton, which I honestly find hard to believe because they are so soft and feel worn in as soon as you slip them on. Usually, 100 percent cotton needs some time to shape to your body and can even feel restrictive, but the cotton used in these jeans is super soft and has a bit of give to them, which adds to that relaxed look.
Pros
- Made from 100% cotton but don’t feel super stiff
- Costs under $100
- Comfortable and relaxed fit
- Gorgeous medium blue denim wash
Cons
- Since they’re a relaxed style, they run a little big. If you like your pants to fit more snugly, I recommend sizing down in these.

Aside from The Seamed Barrel Jean, Just Black Denim has a few additional styles that I am obsessed with for fall—including the best-fitting pair of straight jeans I have ever tried (and I have tried a lot). Here are some additional styles I’m planning to live in this fall.

Just Black Denim The Retro Straight
Just Black Denim The Retro StraightSizes Available: 24-31
Washes: 1
Material: 57% cotton, 24% polyester, 18% rayon, 1% spandex
Rise: 12 inches
Inseam: 30 inchesThere was a time when I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing brown, but I’ve caught onto this year’s favorite color trend, and now it’s all I want to wear (it’s funny how that happens). I love The Retro Straight jeans from Just Black Denim because they have a utility feel but are more minimalistic. The warm brown wash also goes well with lots of different colors, and they fit so well. They’re also constructed from a blend of cotton, polyester, rayon, and spandex, so they feel more lightweight compared to other jeans styles and have the slightest bit of stretch for comfort and flexibility.
I’m planning to wear mine with a tank top (right now, I can’t stop wearing the Old Navy Snug Crop Tank Top) during the early fall months when it’s still a little too hot to bundle up. Once the weather cools off, I think these pants will look amazing with a crewneck sweater and my Dr. Martens Jetta Zipped Boots.
Pros
- Trendy brown wash
- Slightly stretchy
- Flattering fit
Cons
- I wish they came in more colors!

Just Black Denim The Throwback Straight
Just Black Denim The Throwback StraightSizes Available: 24-31
Washes: 1
Material: 100% cotton
Rise: 12 inches
Inseam: 30 inchesThe Throwback Straight jeans are probably one of my favorite jeans I have ever tried from Just Black Denim (and I have worn many of their styles for years). These are constructed from 100 percent cotton, so they have a stiffer, more structural feel to them, but the straight silhouette makes them easy to move in and not restrictive. I love how the dark blue wash isn’t super dark (it’s more of a dark medium), which I think works great in a more transitional season like fall. And the thicker hemline is a refreshing touch to a more vintage-inspired style.
Since I have shorter legs, these hit just below my ankles, giving them more of a faux baggy jean effect while still remaining fitted at the waist. I love wearing them with skate shoes and chunky sneakers, but they would also look super chic over a pair of pointed-toe ankle boots, like these ones from Dolce Vita, with a thick knit sweater.
Pros
- Fits true to size
- On-trend dark blue wash
- Comfortable fit
Cons
- Honestly, nothing!

Just Black Denim The Utility Short
Just Black Denim The Utility ShortSizes Available: XS-L
Washes: 6
Material: 96% cotton, 3% Elasteral-P, 1% spandex
Rise: 12 inches
Inseam: 3.5 inchesWhen it comes to fall fashion, shorts aren’t usually on the radar. But I live in Los Angeles, where it stays in the high 80s well into October (and sometimes even November). Instead of my usual cut-off denim shorts, I like to switch to something a bit more tailored for fall, and The Utility Short from Just Black Denim is already one of my favorite styles of the season. I have these in white and currently wear them with tank tops and sneakers, but I think they would look so cute with a cropped long-sleeve, oversized sweatshirt, or even a fitted cardigan buttoned up to moonlight as a top.
Pros
- Amazing fit
- Comfortable, stretchy material
- A great transitional style
Cons
- Numbered sizes would make these more size inclusive

Just Black Denim The Ultra High Dad Jean
Just Black Denim The Ultra High Dad JeanSizes Available: 24-31
Washes: 3
Material: 96% cotton, 3% Elasteral-P, 1% spandex
Rise: 12 inches
Inseam: 30 inchesI have had The Ultra High Dad Jean from Just Black Denim for over a year, and they continue to be one of my most loved and worn jeans. The style comes in three washes—I have them in black and pink—and features a high-waisted silhouette with baggy legs that I think create the best in-between style for those of us Millennials who aren’t quite ready to let go of our mom jeans and fully relive our low-rise baggy jeans days.
The jeans are mostly made up of cotton, so they have some good structure to them, but they also feature excellent stretch and a softer texture, making them super comfortable. If you’re in between sizes and like your jeans to fit more snugly around the waist, I recommend sizing down in these since they do stretch out a bit (especially if you wear them as much as I have).
Pros
- Comfortable, stretchy denim material
- Flattering fit
- Ultra-versatile
Cons
- They’re a tad long on short legs
- The pink color is sold out
