How to Pick the Best Sunglasses Styles
When it comes to picking the best sunglasses styles, it’s all about finding a pair that suits your face shape best, regardless of the trends. With this in mind, stylist Kam Throckmorton says to first consider shapes that flatter your face. “The most flattering option is a sunglass shape that is opposite from your face shape,” Throckmorton notes. For example, if you have a round face, square lenses will usually look best. While it helps to shop for sunglasses in person — that way, you can try on lots of different styles at a time — some companies, such as Warby Parker, offer convenient try-on programs so that you can easily shop for new styles online.
The shape also matters from a sun protection standpoint. As much as we love the micro-sunnies, they’re not exactly the most functional. “For the best protection, go with the largest style possible,” Throckmorton recommends. “Tiny glasses don’t do much to protect your eyes.”
If you’re splurging on shades, Throckmorton also recommends looking for more versatile styles that go with everything. From there, you can lean into some of the trends so that you have more options when styling your looks. “A bold frame in dramatic black, classic tortoiseshell, or a pop of color is a nice addition to your accessory wardrobe,” she notes.
What to Look for in Sunglasses, According to an Optometrist
Sunglasses might be a fun accessory, but at their core, they’re meant for sun protection. So, when shopping, it’s important to opt for a pair with excellent UV protection. “Look out for labels on the frames themselves or brand websites to ensure the eyewear blocks out 99 percent to 100 percent of both UVA and UVB rays,” says Dr. Cam Letafat, Warby Parker’s territory optometrist leader.
Polarization is also worth considering. “Polarized lenses enhance vision and comfort by reducing glare from reflective surfaces and increasing contrast for bolder colors and crisper vision,” says Dr. Letafat. While polarization is beneficial, Dr. Letafat notes that, depending on your lifestyle and preference, it’s not entirely necessary and that shoppers should “take their optical needs, daily activities, and vision preferences into consideration when choosing polarized or non-polarized sunglasses.”

Jimmy Fairly Coeur Sunglasses
Best Heart-ShapedJimmy Fairly Coeur SunglassesI have had my heart (pun-intended) set on the Saint Laurent SL 181 Loulou Sunglasses for almost a decade now, but they’re a little out of my budget for a pair of heart-shaped sunglasses. If, like me, your sunglasses collection has a heart-shaped hole in it, the Jimmy Fairly Coeur Sunglasses from Anthropologie are another one of my favorite pairs. The glasses retail for $148, so they’re not the most budget-friendly, but they are so well-made and have a designer feel without dropping hundreds of dollars.Dimensions: Not listed

Poppy Lissiman Jimbob Sunglasses
Best With Orange LensesPoppy Lissiman Jimbob SunglassesI took a risk when I bought the Poppy Lissiman Jimbob Sunglasses back in 2021, and it totally paid off. They’re very trendy but also one of the best sunglasses I own — and I pair I practically live in. Now, sunglasses with orange lenses are everywhere with nearly every brand offering their own style. But these tried-and-true shades are still my favorite. While they aren’t the best for super sunny days, the retro 1970s-inspired frame features category 1 UV protection and is an excellent choice for overcast weather. If you love this look but want something more affordable, the Free People Cruise Aviators are a fantastic dupe.
